Not even the stock market meltdown, which ran a close second, could beat the coalition gambit for sheer drama or for provoking a stronger – and mostly irate – response from average Canadians, survey respondents concluded.

The Harper seven-day war. Just 44 days after pledging peace and parliamentary order, Prime Minister Stephen Harper inserted a paragraph into the fiscal update to cancel $30-million worth of public funding for political parties. It was allegedly a cost-savings gesture, but clearly intended to whack less-solvent opposition parties the hardest. Not surprisingly, it unleashed the political firestorm of this century. In less than a week, a coalition of all three opposition parties formed and forced the government to retreat on the party financing cut. When that failed to pacify the trio, Harper delayed a confidence vote and ultimately prorogued Parliament after just 13 sitting days to avoid the government-toppling coronation of Prime Minister Stephane Dion. After Parliament was unplugged and the coalition lost momentum, Liberals shunted aside Dion for new leader Michael Ignatieff and all sides now brace for the return of the re-poisoned Commons atmosphere in late January. Another election lurks on the horizon. The buying opportunity: With the market in meltdown mode and seniors nervously eyeing their cracking nest-eggs, a campaigning Harper declared it a stock-buying opportunity. Never mind that it was a slap to anyone losing their shirts without the financial means to buy back in, it was lousy advice. Anyone who’d followed his suggestion would’ve lost roughly 20 per cent of their investment. Fiscal update: Whatever could’ve possessed Finance Minister Jim Flaherty to add the trickery of cancelled party financing to the rows of imaginary surplus projections in an economic stimulus package and still expect the opposition parties to roll over and endorse his scheme remains the headscratcher of the year. He almost toppled his own government with that recklessly irresponsible, bogus document. No deficit, no recession, no bailouts: So said Stephen Harper repeatedly and defiantly during the fall election campaign. We are now a month away from unveiling a huge deficit to fight a possible depression topped by aid packages for auto, forestry and mining sectors. Oops. - The senate. Senate choices are revolting, Harper handing Liberals more ammunition by his patronage appointment of senators. There are those like me who think the Upper House is nothing more than a high-priced retirement home for political hacks. it will cost hard-pressed Canadian taxpayers a fortune. Each senator makes $134,000 a year, or far, far more than the average person who toils at a real job. But wait that is just the begining, add on their paid overseas trips, expense accounts, etc. This was more about saving his government supporters than anything else. Harper would have had a lot more credibility if he’d left the positions open and kept pushing for reform.
let us call the Senate what it is: a reward for the party faithful; an occasional arbiter of legislative common sense; and a supreme seat of patronage that looks like a violation of democratic principle to most Canadians, and like its epitome to those who rest their backsides in its cushy red chairs. In 2004, when Scott Brison left the Tories to join the Liberals, Mr. Harper said: “Leaving a party and defecting to the other side for 30 pieces of silver is part of corruption.” Then, on the day after Mr. Harper won an election campaign on ethics, he was the one handing out the silver. There is a striking hypocrisy in this, and in many of Mr. Harper’s subsequent actions — where he behaves the same as the cynical Liberals he once compared to Judas Iscariot. It continued this week, when Mr. Harper appointed 18 senators, something he had promised not to do, all the while denouncing the Liberals for blocking his efforts at Senate reform. Mr. Harper, an old Reformer, swore he would be different from his Liberal and Progressive Conservative predecessors. But when faced with the same temptation, he behaved in exactly the same way as prime ministers always have — he appointed old bagmen and political organizers who had been helpful to him in leadership races and election campaigns, along with a few high-profile Canadians as a fig leaf.
Remember how it seemed that Harper didn’t care that he was leading a minority government, next a single, monstrous, Harper’s miscalculation caused a chain reaction that, brought Canada’s economy tumbling down further and Stephen Harper to his knees and he is now cowling in fear.. for the support a coalition government for Canada is growing and why?. It’s clear that Prime Minister Stephen Harper isn’t serious about helping families and . Harper said he’d make Parliament work better this time. He said he’d do something substantial for the economy. Harper the big liar who still cannot be trusted too. It seems that it would only be fair if the mostly useless MPs still can shut down Parliament for 50-plus days, that we, the Canadian taxpayers, should be able to rightfully shut down their paycheques for the same period.

To say that Gov. Palin wasn’t a figure on the national scene prior to her selection as Sen. John McCain’s running mate would be fair. While there were those in the conservative movement who had been talking her up for some time, the majority of Americans outside of Alaska likely had little idea who the hockey mom turned vice presidential candidate was. Thanks to the mainstream media, they probably still don’t.
Gov. Palin was ridiculed by the press but we have a feeling that laughter masked a very deep fear. Few people have exploded onto the national scene as she did to the rapturous joy of a political party. With one stroke Sen. McCain revitalized his campaign, albeit temporarily, and re-earned the support of his base. Gov. Palin became an instant media star, drawing crowds just as large as Barack Obama’s. And unlike Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden, she could claim administrative and legislative experience. In fact, a lot more than either of them.
No single political figure in recent history has galvanized the conservative movement in America the way Governor Palin has. She is a plain speaking fresh face, with a track record of living by her word. – A voter
And that’s probably what the media and the Democrats were so afraid of. After a team of lawyers and investigators sent to Juneau and Wasilla could turn up no scandals, the left resorted to their classic tactic to smear Republicans: intelligence. With the exception of Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush, virtually every presidential and vice presidential candidate in recent memory has been described as ignorant or moronic. With Gov. Palin, they took it to new heights. Even comments made by comedians like Tina Fey were attributed to her. By the time November 4 rolled around, the average American likely thought Gov. Palin couldn’t tie her own shoe laces.
And yet they’re still in fear of her. They continue to attack her despite the fact that she’s returned back to her job as a popular governor of a state most people don’t take notice of. They continue to smear her every chance possible because they know that two things haven’t changed since she was nominated: The Republican Party remains in love with her and the American people still think she has something to offer. They feel it on an instinctual level because they know that Gov. Sarah Palin is one of them. Not a New York media hound, Washington, D.C. elite or Georgetown dinner party regular, but someone who goes to work every day, is family centered and has faith in both God and her country.

John McCain lost the presidential election last year but we can say with certainty that Sarah Palin won the soul of the conservative movement and the Republican Party. We don’t know what her plans for 2012 or 2016 are but we do hope that Alaska’s bet asset doesn’t decide to stay in Juneau for good. Conservatives, and the United States, need her too much.

BCE, Bell Canada the plunging phone company
More bad news for BCE.. The past False, misleading advertisements, bad management, Download cappings, have all lead to this. Shares of BCE tumbled $13.10, or 34 per cent, to $25.25, trimming 102 points from the S&P/TSX composite index, after accounting firm KPMG said it couldn’t certify the solvency of the company before the Dec. 11 deadline for the deal to close. A group of private equity investors led by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan agreed to pay $42.50 a share for BCE in the biggest leveraged buyout of all time. Dec 11, 2008 BCE’s shares have fallen by almost half since Teachers’ made its C$42.75-a-share bid. BCE dropped 59 cents, or 2.6 percent, to C$22.43 at 12:50 p.m. in Toronto.The stock fell 34 percent on Nov. 26 on concern that KPMG was unlikely to bless the deal because of the C$34 billion in bonds and loans needed to finance the purchase. The company hired PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in an unsuccessful effort to persuade KPMG to change its opinion. . BCE lost 72,000 home-phone lines last quarter as customers switched to wireless lines or to cable companies such as Rogers. BCE’s wireless unit, which makes up a quarter of sales, grew at less than half the rate of Rogers’s mobile unit. BCE takes low road as deal fails For all BCE’s protests, the world’s largest leverage buyout just failed because lawyers for the telecom company inserted a requirement in the deal that stated BCE needed to get a favourable solvency opinion. When KPMG, a reputable accounting firm, weighed in with a final opinion that BCE didn’t meet solvency standards, the deal died. OnceBCE agreed to a buyout, they muffed the job of closing the deal.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on Thursday issued a decision ordering Canada’s big phone companies, including Bell, Telus Corp., MTS Allstream Inc., SaskTel and Bell Aliant, to offer the same internet speeds to smaller wholesale customers as they themselves sell on a retail basis.” Service speed is an important competitive attribute, with rates differing significantly by speed and speed often being a major differentiation point from a marketing standpoint,” the CRTC ruled.
Under existing CRTC regulations, the big phone companies are required to rent out their networks to smaller service providers, who then sell internet access to their own customers. The rules boost the number of competitors selling internet access to the public, and thus keep prices down and service levels up. The regulations, however, have only applied to older infrastructure based in phone companies’ centralized office buildings.
Recently, phone companies have been pushing their networks out of those buildings by putting new equipment into streetside cabinets in an effort to boost their customers’ internet speeds. Smaller internet service providers haven’t had regulated access to those cabinets, however, which means they have been limited to selling slower speeds than those offered by the big phone companies.
In Quebec, for example, Bell has been selling internet connections with download speeds around 16 megabits per second while small ISPs have topped out at less than half that. The phone companies will only be required to offer faster speeds to wholesale ISPs when they sell them on a retail basis in a given area. Smaller ISPs will therefore have to request the faster connections from the phone companies. Bell, Telus and the others have 45 days to file with the CRTC the proposed rates they intend to charge the small ISPs for faster services. The rates will have to represent the actual cost of the service, plus “a reasonable mark-up,” the regulator said.

NEW YORK – Three months ago, Guy Distaffen switched Internet providers, lured from his cable company to his phone company by a year of free service on a two-year contract. But soon the company quietly updated its policies to say it would limit his Internet activity each month. “We felt that were suckered,” said Distaffen, who lives in the small village of Silver Springs in upstate New York. The phone company, Frontier Communications Corp., is one of several Internet service providers that are moving to curb the growth of traffic on their networks, or at least make the subscribers who download the most pay more.

Comcast Corp., the second-largest internet service provider in the United States, confirmed Thursday it would set an official limit on the amount of data subscribers can download and upload each month. On Oct. 1, the cable company will change its user agreement to say that users will be allowed 250 gigabytes of traffic per month, the company announced on its website.
Caps are not the same as throttling. Many ISP such as Bell also have severe download throtlling during peak times, evenings and weekends.. and they throttle torrents FROM 520 Kb/sec, to a trickle of 30 Kb/sec!!!
Any excuse to “throttle” or to cap for extra cash seems to be the fare of the day with greedy gouging hogs, wild Boars, the ISP’s these days.

BEIJING (AFP) – Around four million Chinese youngsters are addicted to the Internet, mainly attracted by “unhealthy” online games, state media reported Friday, citing a top legislator. “Internet-addicted teenagers” account for around 10 percent of China’s Web users under the age of 18, the Beijing Times said, quoting Li Jianguo, a vice chairman of the standing committee of the National People’s Congress, or parliament. The committee has called for stricter monitoring of Internet games that have illegal or inappropriate content, the report said. It has also said games should include technology that automatically logs players off once they exceed a set number of hours of continuous play.

Victims of deadly C. difficile outbreak seek right to sue Quebec hospital - MONTREAL – Victims of two outbreaks of C. difficile at a hospital near Montreal are asking the court for permission to sue the hospital for millions of dollars. A class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the victims, both dead and living, as well as the Association to Defend Victims of Nosocomial Infections. Lawyer Jean-Pierre Menard is expected to announce further details during a news conference Thursday morning in Montreal. C. difficile is a common bacterial infection in hospitals but it can be especially deadly in people weakened by illness. Sixteen people died at the Honore-Mercier Hospital in St-Hyacinthe after contracting C. difficile between May and November of 2006. I have been writing now over 2 years to the federal and provincial governments, health Ministers, even on the net that the Shit diseases has not been adequately looked after in Hospitals even and that one death from this disease, most of which could have been prevented is unacceptable still too

About a decade ago when I started to use the health system in Canada, in Alberta and next in Quebec, I started at the wrong time too to next see what it really was like, inadequate and with much too many unacceptable shortcomings too.

It is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients in the industrialized world. Control measures include extra housecleaning, cleaning patient rooms twice a day and making sure even the phones and light switches are cleaned with heavy duty products that kill C. difficile spores.. a number of factors contribute to C. difficile outbreaks including the severity of the disease, the abilities of the organism to live on surfaces for months, elderly patients, older hospitals with multi-bed rooms and overcrowding of facilities. An infectious disease expert who fought on the front lines of the Quebec C. difficile outbreak that claimed thousands of lives says it’s “surprising” Ontario has taken so long to target the infection. “It’s a bit surprising that Ontario, which is right next door to Quebec, would wait for so long to implement a basic surveillance system,” said Dr. Jacques Pepin, an infectious disease expert at Sherbrooke University. “It’s not very good.” A review of deaths by the Infection Prevention and Control Unit of the University Health Network in Toronto shows the outbreak ran from May 1, 2006, to Dec. 31, 2007, starting seven months earlier than originally thought, and that it was about four times as deadly.” http://www.thespec.com/News/Local/article/365792

“It’s all to convince to convey that Bell is and has gotten better,” Bell Mobility president Wade Oosterman said in an interview.
But telecom analyst Carmi Levy of AR Communications said the changes will have little impact unless they are accompanied by a dramatic improvement to customer service.
“You can change your logo and you can change the name of your offering until the cows come home but if you don’t change the fundamental way that you operate, then the rebranding effort will be for not,” the Toronto-based analyst said in an interview.
He said Bell needs to be less adversarial and aggressive with customers and more responsive to their needs.
“This needs to be just the first salvo in an ongoing effort to become a softer friendlier company to deal with.”
New Bell chief executive George Cope has promised to improve customer service as it completely overhauls the vast business. The Montreal-based company recently announced plans to shed 15 per cent of management and sell non-core assets.

Analysts say there’s more bloodletting ahead at telecom giant Bell Canada following news yesterday the company is axing 2500 managers . - BCE Inc.’s newly appointed chief executive George Cope announced the company will shed 2,500 management positions representing several layers of bureaucracy as the first steps of a plan designed to steer the bloated telecommunication giant back into competitive shape. The layoffs, which include the reduction of 15 per cent of BCE’s management and 30 per cent of its senior leadership team, will be focused in the company’s main business units such as its Bell Canada, Mobility, ExpressVu and Enterprise groups, Cope said. Non-management front-line service positions are not affected by the announcement, although it is expected some of its 54,000-strong workforce will be cut by the end of the year.
